Reaffirmation of ASA/BSR S12.55 and Amendment 1

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) have announced a public review opportunity for the reaffirmation of ASA/BSR S12.55-2012 / ISO 3745:2012 (R20XX) and ASA/BSR S12.55-2012/Amd 1-2021 / ISO 3745:2012/Amd 1:2017 (R20XX)

The announcement can be found in ANSI Standards Action, and includes a Call for Members notice inviting directly and materially affected parties to participate in the ANSI-accredited consensus body responsible for these standards.

Public review comments are due by August 3, 2026.

ASA/BSR S12.55-2012 / ISO 3745:2012 (R20XX)Acoustics — Determination of sound power levels of noise sources using sound pressure — Precision methods for anechoic and hemi-anechoic roomsThis American National Standard specifies methods for measuring sound pressure levels on a measurement surface surrounding a noise source (machinery or equipment) in an anechoic room or hemi-anechoic room. The resulting measurements are used to calculate the sound power level, or, in the case of impulsive or transient noise, the sound energy level of the source. The standard also provides corrections for differences between test conditions and reference acoustic conditions.$339.00
ASA/BSR S12.55-2012 / ISO 3745:2012 (R20XX)Acoustics — Determination of sound power levels of noise sources using sound pressure — Precision methods for anechoic and hemi-anechoic roomsThe performance of an anechoic or hemi-anechoic room is tested by comparing the spatial decrease of sound pressure emitted from a test sound source with the decrease of sound pressure that would occur in an ideal free sound field. The evaluation of this performance is based on the procedures outlined in ISO 26101.$40.00

How to Obtain Copies and Submit Comments

Electronic copies of both standards are available from the Acoustical Society of America upon request at standards@acousticalsociety.org. Comments on the proposed reaffirmations must be submitted by August 3, 2026, to standards@acousticalsociety.org, with a copy provided to psa@ansi.org.

Get Involved

ASA encourages acousticians, testing laboratories, manufacturers, researchers, regulators, and other interested stakeholders to review these proposed reaffirmations and provide comments during the public review period.

In addition, directly and materially affected parties interested in participating in the ANSI-accredited consensus body are encouraged to inquire about membership opportunities by contacting asastandards@acousticalsociety.org. Broad stakeholder participation helps ensure that American National Standards continue to reflect current technical practice, industry needs, and consensus-based decision-making.
