October 14, 2026, is World Standards Day—a day to recognize the important role standards play in creating a safer, more connected, and more sustainable world.
This year’s World Standards Day theme shines a spotlight on Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, highlighting how standards can help turn global goals into practical solutions. But behind every standard is something just as
important as the technical requirements themselves: people.
At the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), standards are developed through the knowledge, experience, and collaboration of experts from across the acoustics community.
Standards Are Built Through Collaboration
A standard is not simply a document that appears when a need arises. It is the result of people coming together to identify challenges, share expertise, consider different perspectives, and work toward consensus. ASA Standards provides the framework for that work. Through ASA’s standards development activities, subject-matter experts participate in working groups, review proposed language, consider technical issues, and contribute to the development and revision of standards that serve the acoustics community. That participation matters. The best standards reflect current knowledge, real-world experience, and the needs of the people who use them.
Keeping Standards Relevant
Technology changes. Research advances. Industries evolve. New challenges emerge. That means standards must evolve, too. World Standards Day is a reminder that developing a standard is only part of the process. Keeping standards current and relevant requires continued participation from the people who understand the field. Whether you are already involved in ASA Standards or are considering becoming involved, your expertise can help shape the standards that guide acoustical practice.
Your Expertise Has a Place at the Table
World Standards Day celebrates the collaborative nature of standardization around the world. ASA Standards is proud to be part of that larger standards community. On October 14, take a moment to recognize the experts who volunteer their time and knowledge to develop and improve standards—and consider how you might contribute.
Standards are more than technical documents. They are the result of people working together to create solutions that can serve the needs of today and tomorrow.
