Working Group on Method for the Selection of Hearing Protectors that Optimize the Ability to Communicate
Chair: ASA Standards
Scope: The development of a method of selecting hearing protection that provides sufficient protection in specific noise exposures while optimizing the ability to communicate. The method will be applicable to individuals with normal hearing and to individuals with mild, moderate and severe hearing losses. The purpose is to allow the selection of hearing protection that prevents noise-induced hearing loss but that does not unnecessarily inhibit communication. The use of proper hearing protection optimizes verbal communication, warning signal recognition and recognition of machine operating sounds.
