2.34  background noise. Total of all sources of interference in a system used for the production, detection, measurement, or recording of a signal, independent of the presence of the signal.

Annotation 1          Ambient sound detected, measured, or recorded with the signal is part of the background noise.

Annotation 2          Included in the definition of background noise is the interference resulting from primary electric power supplies that is commonly described as hum.
