5.38  method of ratio production; method of fractionation; method of matching; method of multiplication; method of sensation ratios. Test method whereby a subject adjusts a stimulus along some dimension until that stimulus appears to be a specific fraction or multiple of a reference stimulus. Used primarily to scale sensations.

Annotation 1      When the variable stimulus is adjusted to some fraction of the reference, the procedure is called fractionation; when the stimulus is adjusted to some multiple of the reference, the procedure is called multiplication.

Annotation 2      When the variable stimulus is adjusted to appear equal to the reference stimulus the procedure is known as matching.
