4.17  mode of vibration. Characteristic pattern assumed by a system undergoing vibration in which the motion of every particle is simple harmonic or damped harmonic with the same frequency and with a fixed-phase relationship. Two or more modes may exist concurrently in a multiple-degree-of-freedom system.
