4.21  cochlear microphonic. Alternating current electric potential generated within the cochlea in response to a sound stimulus. At low and moderate sound pressures the amplitude of the cochlear microphonic is proportional to the instantaneous sound pressure of the stimulus, and is a faithful reproduction of the stimulus waveform. The source of the cochlear microphonic is believed to be the hair cells in the organ of Corti. Unit, volt (V).

Annotation 1      At low and moderate sound pressures, the amplitude of the cochlear microphonic is a linear function of the instantaneous displacement of the basilar membrane.

Annotation 2      Maximum peak amplitude of the cochlear microphonic within the scala media is 2 to 5 mV.
