3.01 acoustic nerve; auditory nerve; eighth cranial nerve; vestibulocochlear nerve. Nerve, consisting of two sets of fibers: the anterior branch or cochlear nerve and the posterior branch or vestibular nerve. Afferent fibers of the nerve conduct neural signals from the inner ear to the central nervous system; efferent fibers transmit signals from the central nervous system to the inner ear.
