3.71 tympanic membrane; eardrum; drum membrane. Conical shaped translucent membrane that separates the external acoustic meatus from the middle ear cavity. The handle of the malleus is attached to the tympanic membrane medially.
Annotation The amplitude of displacement of the tympanic membrane for a 1000 Hz tone at the threshold of audibility is about 10 nm. For low-frequency tones at the threshold of feeling the amplitude of displacement is about 0.1 mm.
