5.08 free sound field; free field. Field in a homogeneous medium free from boundaries. In practice, the effects of boundaries on a free field are negligible over the region of interest.
Annotation The actual pressure impinging on an object (e.g., on an electroacoustic transducer) placed in an otherwise free sound field will differ from the pressure which would exist at that point with the object removed, unless the acoustic impedance of the object matches the acoustic impedance of the medium.
