3.63 stapes; stirrup. Innermost and smallest of the three auditory ossicles that are located in the middle ear. The shape of the stapes resembles a stirrup. The head of the stapes is attached to the lenticular process of the incus. The footplate of the stapes nearly fills the oval window and is attached to it by the annular ligament.
