4.52  ototoxic, ototoxicity. The property of being toxic to the hearing mechanism, specifically, the cochlea and/or auditory nerve and vestibular function. This can result in sensorineural hearing loss, dysequilibrium, or both. These conditions may be permanent or temporary and reversible.

Annotation            Ototoxicity is commonly caused by medications. Ototoxic drugs include antibiotics, pain medications, diuretics, and chemotherapy agents.
