Annotation 1 Experiments have revealed several practical dimensions for pitch: (1) the perceptual dimension of pitch height (see 12.10), which defines the position of the tone along a scale from low to high, normally monotonic with the physical dimension of frequency; (2) the circular dimension of pitch class (see 12.09), which defines the position of the tone within the octave. Annotation 2 The pitch of a sound may be described by the frequency of that simple tone having a specified sound pressure level that is judged by listeners to produce the same pitch.
