6.06  auditory lateralization; lateralization. Determination by a subject that the apparent direction of a sound is either left or right of the frontal-medial plane of the head.

Annotation 1      Auditory lateralization is usually restricted to sounds presented by earphones or by bone conduction vibrators, or to free-field sounds when rotation of the head is inhibited.

Annotation 2      Identical sound stimuli presented to each ear appear to be centered at the medial plane of the head. Stimuli that are dichotic in time, phase, or amplitude tend to shift the apparent location of the sound toward the ear that receives the earlier arrival, the leading phase, or the greater amplitude, respectively.
